Dawn chorus was very loud but not too many birds were flying. Everything seems to be looking like breeding is on.<br /><br />
Connie called that she had a bird in Net 14 and thought it might be a Swamp Sparrow. Indeed it was! Usually they are lurking down by the lake's edge but this one ventured up the river.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/031724LALO/031724-Swamp_Sparrow_03.jpg" alt="Swamp Sparrow" width="505" hieght="374" title="Swamp Sparrow"><br /><br />
Jenny always thinks that her bird photos make them look like Muppets. Because she makes them stare into the camera that way.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/031724LALO/031724-Swamp_Sparrow_02.jpg" alt="Swamp Sparrow" width="505" hieght="374" title="Swamp Sparrow"><br /><br />
Our new volunteer, Alex, got to release our first bird of the day.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/031724LALO/031724_Swamp_Sparrow_01.jpg" alt="Swamp Sparrow" width="505" hieght="647" title="Swamp Sparrow"><br /><br />
Soon afterwards we had a House Wren.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/031724LALO/031724_House_Wren.jpg" alt="House Wren" width="505" hieght="374" title="House Wren"><br /><br />
Northern Cardinals very loud right now as they set up house. We captured a male and later a female with a begining brood patch. Babies are on the way.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/031724LALO/031724_Northern_Cardinal.jpg" alt="Northern Cardinal" width="505" hieght="647" title="Northern Cardinal"><br /><br />
Gray Catbirds are heading out next month but we did hear them and got two today.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/031724LALO/031724_Gray_Catbird.jpg" alt="Gray Catbird" width="505" hieght="374" title="Gray Catbird"><br /><br />
Blue-gray Gnatcatchers are also getting louder and busier. We usually don't catch them until they get distracted by chasing one another around. Today we got a nice adult male. <br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/031724LALO/031724_Blue_Gray_Gnatcatcher_01.jpg" alt="Blue-gray Gnatcatcher" width="505" hieght="374" title="Blue-gray Gnatcatcher"><br /><br />
You can easily tell the adult males by that bold eyebrow. He was a great looking guy.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/031724LALO/031724_Blue_Gray_Gnatcatcher_02.jpg" alt="Blue-gray Gnatcatcher" width="505" hieght="647" title="Blue-gray Gnatcatcher"><br /><br />
Caterpillars are dropping out of the trees. Food for all the migrating birds, but sometimes they fall on us banders. Like this Eastern Tent Caterpillar.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/031724LALO/031724_Eastern_Tent_Caterpillar.jpg" alt="Eastern Tent Caterpillar" width="505" hieght="374" title="Eastern Tent Caterpillar"><br /><br />
Time to head out and see if our luck holds out so that we can band again next Sunday. Should be a nice day and we look forward to arriving migrants. <br /><br />

This morning we discovered a large chunk of oak tree had fallen and missed the pole for Net 7 by less than an inch. We were still able to set the net and the rangers will have a little chore next week.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/022524LALO/022524_Tree.jpg" alt="Oak Tree" width="505" hieght="647" title="Oak Tree"><br /><br />
Spring has sprung a little early. At least thats what the Northern Parulas are telling us. They are back on their breeding grounds (here) in good numbers. But they stayed high in the trees today. Must trees are in bloom and attracting the most insects.<br /><br />
Lower to the ground was our first Northern Cardinal, a female.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/022524LALO/022524_Northern_Cardnial_01.jpg" alt="Northern Cardinal" width="505" hieght="647" title="Northern Cardinal"><br /><br />
Then our first House Wren in quite a while.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/022524LALO/022524_House_Wren.jpg" alt="House Wren" width="505" hieght="647" title="House Wren"><br /><br />
Eastern Tent Caterpillars are popping up in several spots along the net lanes.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/022524LALO/022524_Tent-Caterpillar.jpg" alt="Eastern Tent Caterpillar" width="505" hieght="647" title="Eastern Tent Caterpillar"><br /><br />
Jenny came back from Net 21 with a recaptured Yellow-rumped Warbler. It was first banded 12/22 as a juvenile and is now molting into its breeding plumage.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/022524LALO/022524_MYWA.jpg" alt="Yellow-rumped Warbler" width="505" hieght="374" title="Yellow-rumped Warbler"><br /><br />
The UCF Knighthawks joined us today to observe banding and do a little bird watching.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/022524LALO/022524_Knighthawks.jpg" alt="Knighthawks" width="505" hieght="374" title="Knighthawks"><br /><br />
Next up, a male Northern Cardinal.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/022524LALO/022524_Northern_Cardnial_02.jpg" alt="Northern Cardinal" width="505" hieght="647" title="Northern Cardinal"><br /><br />
Another sign of Spring: Lobilia are begining to bloom all over.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/022524LALO/022524_Lobilia.jpg" alt="Lobilia" width="505" hieght="647" title="Lobilia"><br /><br />
Our final bird of the day was a Western Palm Warbler molting into his rusty crown.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/022524LALO/022524_Western_Palm_Warbler.jpg" alt="Western Palm Warbler" width="505" hieght="374" title="Western Palm Warbler"><br /><br />
It was a typical late February but things should pick up soon for Spring Migration.<br /><br />
Be sure to check back to the blog by Saturday to make sure we are banding. Rains are forecast from Saturday through next Friday.<br /><br />

It was a slow day as the wind picked steadily. We also had a feeling we would have to do some repairs after leaving the area to the bear for 3 weeks. Sure enough, there were 5 poles compromised. <br /><br />
Later in the morning, we found a Bear Bed. Looks like it was used multiple times. We haven't run into the bear itself. We can keep it that way... <br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/021124LALO/021124_Bear_Bed.jpg" alt="Bear Bed" width="505" hieght="374" title="Bear Bed"><br /><br />
Just at dawn we heard Catbirds sounding a little weird near the table. THey were headed toward Net2 so Andrew headed up to se if we would have a Catbird in the net. Nope. But we did have a new Eastern Screech Owl! <br /><br />
It has been just over 5 year since we last had an Eastern Screech Owl.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/021124LALO/021124_Eastern_Screech_Owl.jpg" alt="Eastern Screech Owl" width="505" hieght="374" title="Eastern Screech Owl"><br /><br />
Next up was a male Northern Cardinal and on the way back to the table, Jenny and Alex also picked up a Carolina Wren. <br /><br />
Andrew decided it was dry enough finally to try for a trip to the lake. It was more difficult in the past do to overgrowth and some fallen willows. Along the way he found a new bloom. iNaturalist calls it a Southern Swamp Crinum. <br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/021124LALO/021124_Southern_Swamp_Crinum.jpg" alt="Southern Swamp Crinum" width="505" hieght="374" title="Southern Swamp Crinum"><br /><br />
Eventually the edge of the lake was reached with an open view to the Window-on-the-Lake. This is the only way to see it since the boardwalk is still closed. <br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/021124LALO/021124_Window-on-the-Lake.jpg" alt="Window-on-the-Lake" width="505" hieght="374" title="Window-on-the-Lake"><br /><br />
A quiet day. At least we did manage to get a Sunday in for February. However, it is forecast to rain ALL weekend so we have to skip the 18th. <br /><br />
A shame since that is part of the Great Backyard Bird Count that runs from the 16th through the 19th. If you can, get out and count some birds and report them! All the information to participate is at: https://www.birdcount.org.<br /><br />

Very gray, but the wet stayed away for the entire day. So did most of the birds.<br /><br />
Andrew had his Spidy-senses tingling on the way in. Would it be a semi parked? Parking area closed? Sure enough, a new addition to our parking situation was there. Mattresses and sofas. <br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/011424LALO/011424_Dumped.jpg" alt="Trash" width="505" hieght="374" title="Trash"><br /><br />
Our first bird of the New Year was a recaptured female Northern Cardinal first banded last May. Our Cardinals sport what the volunteers call a "tantrum stick" to keep them from biting the banders. It is featured in our new logo, too. <br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/011424LALO/011424_Northern_Cardinal_01.jpg" alt="Northern Cardinal" width="505" hieght="647" title="Northern Cardinal"><br /><br />
Second up was a recaptured Brown Thrasher. Then things got real quiet. Not a lot of birds were moving around today.<br /><br />

We did get a pair of female Ruby-crowned Kinglets in the nets next to each other half-way down the lanes. <br /><br />

Our new visitor, Megan, got to release one of the Ruby-crowned Kinglets.<br /><br />

Our last bird of the day was a new male Northern Cardinal. It was hatched here last Spring and is establishing his new territory.<br /><br />

The weather is on a major rollercoaster this month. Will we be able to band next Sunday? Perhaps. It might be too cold for some. We Floridians are not happy with temps in the 30s, nor do the birds. We shall see. <br /><br />

As the Sun rose, the steam was coming off the river. The rains from the last big front washed our bridge away and we set more logs to get out to Net 21 again. <br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/123123LALO/123123_River.jpg" alt="River" width="505" hieght="647" title="River"><br /><br />
All of our birds were recaptures, including a Northern Cardnial and a Carolina Wren. Then we did get a recaptured Western Palm Warbler out by Net 21.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/123123LALO/123123_Western_Palm_Warbler.jpg" alt="Western Palm Warbler" width="505" hieght="374" title="Western Palm Warbler"><br /><br />
Our final bird of the day was a House Wren. Looking pretty but its band was covered in mud, making it difficult to read the numbers until we cleaned it off.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/123123LALO/123123_House_Wren.jpg" alt="House Wren" width="505" hieght="374" title="House Wren"><br /><br />
A new front is moving down this weekend but should clear by Sunday. Hoping things will trend upward from here until Spring.<br /><br />

Even if the rain lets up a bit the winds are going to render the nets usless.
Merry Christmas. <br /><br /><br />

We got 2! Checking our records shows that we have pretty quiet Decembers every other year. That is where we appear to be now. Birds were virtually non-existant after 8:30.<br /><br />
We did get a Gray Catbird first thing in the morning.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/121023LALO/121023_Gray_Catbird.jpg" alt="Gray Catbird" width="505" hieght="374" title="Gray Catbird"><br /><br />
Then, as we were about to close up, we recaptured a Carolina Wren first banded a few years ago.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/121023LALO/121023_Carolina_Wren.jpg" alt="Carolina Wren" width="505" hieght="374" title="Carolina Wren"><br /><br />
It is looking doubtful for next Sunday as a large swath of rain and wind is headed this way. Currently scheduled for the whole weekend. Be sure to check back to see if we are able to go. If not, we won't be back until New Years Eve.<br /><br />

Then we waited. And waited. Annnd waited.<br /><br />
2 hours later we captuered our lone bird of the day. A female Ruby-crowned Kinglet.<br /><br />

Reporting was that it was not going to be raining until the afternoon. Yeah... We still got there and set up fine and thought nothing of it. Mainly because we had more bear things to deal with. Net 15 was tilted and we hoped that was going to be it. However, Net 13 was bent to the ground and we had to reset completely at daybreak. <br /><br />
While we were doing that, a Ruby-crowned Kinglet dropped in like a falling leaf nextdoor in Net 9. Our first of the season. Later on, we caught another one that we first banded in January.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/112623LALO/112624_Ruby-crowned_Warbler.jpg" alt="Ruby-crowned Kinglet" width="505" hieght="374" title="Ruby-crowned Kinglet"><br /><br />
Connie came in with a Common Yellowthroat next. An adult female.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/112623LALO/112624_Common_Yellowthroat.jpg" alt="Common Yellowthroat" width="505" hieght="374" title="Common Yellowthroat"><br /><br />
While we taking that bird back, Jenny was extracting a recaptured House Wren.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/112623LALO/112624_House_Wren.jpg" alt="House Wren" width="505" hieght="374" title="House Wren"><br /><br />
Then the rain began. Not horrible. Just constant sprinkles that forced us to close the nets for a half an hour. Waves of sprinkles were coming in for the rest of the day but we managed to stay open until the end of the scheduled day.
We spent some of the time rescuing the bridge that washed away during the last rains. As we were exploring the flora and fauna a Gray Catbird decided to join us.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/112623LALO/112624_Gray_Catbird.jpg" alt="Gray Catbird" width="505" hieght="374" title="Gray Catbird"><br /><br />
Since we were able to open Net 21 this week we did end up with a very fiesty Western Palm Warbler. A nice addition for a gloomy morning.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/112623LALO/112624_Western_Palm_Warbler.jpg" alt="Western Palm Warbler" width="505" hieght="374" title="Western Palm Warbler"><br /><br />
Sunday is going to be another mix, weather-wise, but we hope to have a better capture rate now that the remaining species should be arriving before Winter. <br /><br />

The river was nearly cresting the banks but did cut of Net 21. The whole area was still pretty wet. We still had a couple interesting birds join us today.<br /><br />
Our first bird was a recaptured Northern Cardinal who was processed and released before Connie brought in the Birds-of-the-Day. First up was a our first Orange-crowned Warbler in 3 years. Typically, they hang out in the Willows by Net 21 but this one was a hundred yards up the river in Net 14. <br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/111923LALO/111923_Orange-crowned_Warbler.jpg" alt="Orange-crowned Warbler" width="505" hieght="374" title="Orange-crowned Warbler"><br /><br />
Not far from that, a Wood Thrush was in Net 12. We have had several this year which is rare. <br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/111923LALO/111923_Wood_Thrush.jpg" alt="Wood Thrush" width="505" hieght="647" title="Wood Thrush"><br /><br />
A recaptured juvenile Carolina Wren was processed and then we recaptured a Brown Thrasher banded 4 years ago.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/111923LALO/111923_Brown_Thrasher.jpg" alt="Brown Thrasher" width="505" hieght="374" title="Brown Thrasher"><br /><br />
As we considered closing nets, Alex was heard calling that there was a bird in Net 15. It was a female Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. They are difficult to capture. They see the nets and often just stop and fly over them. <br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/111923LALO/111923_Blue-gray_Gnatcatcher.jpg" alt="Blue-gray Gnatcatcher" width="505" hieght="374" title="Blue-gray Gnatcatcher"><br /><br />
Robins are finally back and we await Waxwings, Goldfinches, and Yellow-rumped Warblers. The latter is the only speices we do catch in the Winter. Nets are always half-full!<br /><br />

Things are settling in for the season and still a little quiet.<br /><br />
Our first bird right after dawn was our 2nd Swamp Sparrow in two weeks. Odd thing is that is was in Net 8 which is right next to the woods. Why is a Swamp Sparrow coming out of the woods? Should be out by the the water. Strange.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/111223LALO/111223_Swamp_Sparrow.jpg" alt="Swamp Sparrow" width="505" hieght="374" title="Swamp Sparrow"><br /><br />
Next up, a Hermit Thrush recapture banded exactly one year ago in the same spot it was first caught. We are very interested in this kind of data showing birds show site fidelity over the years.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/111223LALO/111223_Hermit_Thrush_01.jpg" alt="Hermit Thrush" width="505" hieght="374" title="Hermit Thrush"><br /><br />
Juvenile Carolina Wrens are out and about. Like this recaptured bird.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/111223LALO/111223_Carolina_Wren_01.jpg" alt="Carolina Wren" width="505" hieght="374" title="Carolina Wren"><br /><br />
A recaptured female Northern Cardinal arrived soon afterwards.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/111223LALO/111223_Northern_Cardinal_01.jpg" alt="Northern Cardinal" width="505" hieght="647" title="Northern Cardinal"><br /><br />
House Wrens have been laying low and we only got one today.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/111223LALO/111223_House_Wren.jpg" alt="House Wren" width="505" hieght="374" title="House Wren"><br /><br />
Hermit Thrushes should have been here a few weeks ago. Our second was a recapture from 3 years ago, also in a net where it was first captured. <br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/111223LALO/111223_Hermit_Thrush_02.jpg" alt="Hermit Thrush" width="505" hieght="374" title="Hermit Thrush"><br /><br />
Then, a male Northern Cardinal recapture hit the nets.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/111223LALO/111223_Northern_Cardinal_02.jpg" alt="Northern Cardinal" width="505" hieght="647" title="Northern Cardinal"><br /><br />
Finally, another juvenile Carolina Wren, first banded this Spring, was processed.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/111223LALO/111223_Carolina_Wren_02.jpg" alt="Carolina Wren" width="505" hieght="647" title="Carolina Wren"><br /><br />
We hope this front clears in time for next weekend and brings more migrants our way. It should be a nice day, weather-wise, regardless. <br /><br />

Now we wait for the next wave. There was still fun to be had.<br /><br />
Our first bird was a juvenile Gray Catbird. It posed nicely to dislay the inside of its bill. We use this to quickly age Catbirds. When they are young the lining is white-ish/pink and by the time they are adults it becomes completely black.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/110523LALO/110523_Gray_Catbird.jpg" alt="Gray Catbird" width="505" hieght="647" title="Gray Catbird"><br /><br />
A lone female Indigo Bunting was up next.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/110523LALO/110523_Indigo_Bunting.jpg" alt="Indigo Bunting" width="505" hieght="374" title="Indigo Bunting"><br /><br />
While half of us were spread out through the property it seems like there was a bit of excitement back by the table. There was a pair of Bald Eagles having a disagreement and one of them hit Net 3! Jenny tried to keep it in but it soon extracted itself and flew off, leaving us a little net repair. Loads of Eagles are arriving to nest and fighting for territory is fierce.<br /><br />
Then things grew quiet for a while so we busied ourselves with some vine trimming and bird watching. Eventually, we caught a Swamp Sparrow. For the last couple of years this species and stayed right at the lake's edge. This bird came up the river to join us.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/110523LALO/110523_Swamp_Sparrow.jpg" alt="Swamp Sparrow" width="505" hieght="374" title="Swamp Sparrow"><br /><br />
Our new visitor, David, got to release the Swamp Sparrow.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/110523LALO/110523_Swamp_Sparrow_02.jpg" alt="Swamp Sparrow" width="505" hieght="647" title="Swamp Sparrow"><br /><br />
George has been here several times and finally mustered the courage to release his first bird. It was a Common Yellowthroat. (Psssst! He liked it!)<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/110523LALO/110523_Common_Yellowthoat.jpg" alt="Common Yellowthroat" width="505" hieght="647" title="Common Yellowthroat"><br /><br />
As we were closing up, we could hear Lynn yelling at Net 7. It soon became apparent it was because a bird was biting her as she was attempting to extract it. The angry bird? A recaptured Tufted Titmouse. They like to bite.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/110523LALO/110523_Tufted_Titmouse_01.jpg" alt="Tufted Titmouse" width="505" hieght="374" title="Tufted Titmouse"><br /><br />
But Tufted Titmice are very cute when they want to be.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/110523LALO/110523_Tufted_Titmouse_02.jpg" alt="Tufted Titmouse" width="505" hieght="374" title="Tufted Titmouse"><br /><br />
Hopefully, next Sunday will pick up more. We are still waiting for several species to arrive.<br /><br />

The mosquitoes, though, were happy and very aggresive all morning. Cooler weather should be here soon.<br /><br />
First bird just after dawn was a female Indigo Bunting.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/102923LALO/102923_Indigo_Bunting.jpg" alt="Indigo Bunting" width="505" hieght="374" title="Indigo Bunting"><br /><br />
Soon after that, a very angry recaptured Carolina Wren.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/102923LALO/102923_Carolina_Wren.jpg" alt="Carolina Wren" width="505" hieght="647" title="Carolina Wren"><br /><br />
Common Yellowthroats ruled the day. and we had all ages and both sexes. This is a juvenile male.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/102923LALO/102923_Common-yellow_Throat.jpg" alt="Common Yellowthroat" width="505" hieght="374" title="Common Yellowthroat"><br /><br />
We got a couple of Gray Catbirds. They were staying mainly back in the woods.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/102923LALO/102923_Gray_Catbird.jpg" alt="Gray Catbird" width="505" hieght="374" title="Gray Catbird"><br /><br />
We primarily catch Western Palm Warblers but today we got a rarer, more yellow, Eastern Palm Warbler.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/102923LALO/102923_Eastern_Palm_Warbler.jpg" alt="Eastern Palm Warbler" width="505" hieght="374" title="Eastern Palm Warbler"><br /><br />
Next up, a handsome Swainson's Thrush.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/102923LALO/102923_Swainsons_Thrush.jpg" alt="Swainson's Thrush" width="505" hieght="374" title="Swainson's Thrush"><br /><br />
It has been a while since we have captured a female Black-throated Blue Warbler. A nice surprise.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/102923LALO/102923_Black-throated_Blue_Warbler.jpg" alt="Black-throated Blue Warbler" width="505" hieght="374" title="Black-throated Blue Warbler"><br /><br />
White-eyed Vireos that migrate through the area are usually adults and full of fat. Today was a juvenile also loaded with fat.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/102923LALO/102923_White-eyed_Vireo.jpg" alt="White-eyed Vireo" width="505" hieght="374" title="White-eyed Vireo"><br /><br />
Most people consider this male Painted Bunting to be Bird-of-the-Day. What do you think.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/102923LALO/102923_Painted_Bunting.jpg" alt="Painted Bunting" width="505" hieght="374" title="Painted Bunting"><br /><br />
An unbanded Northern Cardinal turned out to be a juvenile most likely hatched here in the Spring.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/102923LALO/102923_Northern_Cardinal.jpg" alt="Northern Cardinal" width="505" hieght="647" title="Northern Cardinal"><br /><br />
Our final capture was another candidate for Bird-of-the-Day. A Wood Thrush.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/102923LALO/102923_Wood_Thrush.jpg" alt="Wood Thrush" width="505" hieght="374" title="Wood Thrush"><br /><br />
A nice end to a busy month. Hope we can keep the numbers up through November. <br /><br />

Many volunteers and visiters with a steady stream of birds all morning. <br /><br />
Not going to detail everything from today as most of our birds were House Wrens. But we did start the day with a Gray Catbird. <br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/102223LALO/102223_Gray_Catbird_03.jpg" alt="Gray Catbird" width="505" hieght="374" title="Gray Catbird"><br /><br />
Our newest volunteer, Rachael, got to release the Gray Catbird and others throughout the morning and plans to be a steady volunteer working towrds toward starting her own banding project in the future at the Orlando Airport. <br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/102223LALO/102223_Gray_Catbird_02.jpg" alt="Gray Catbird" width="505" hieght="647" title="Gray Catbird"><br /><br />
Then the House Wrens began and did not let up across our time here this morning. We ended up with 12 today. This is the most House Wren activity we have seen in years. Typically we have a couple a day into Spring, but they are everywhere so far this season. We won't give you a ton of them in photos. They all look alike. <br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/102223LALO/102223_House_Wren.jpg" alt="House Wren" width="505" hieght="374" title="House Wren"><br /><br />
Next up, Common Yellowthroats started hitting nets. The adult males and females are arriving and we had 5 today.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/102223LALO/102223_Common_Yellowthroat.jpg" alt="Common Yellowthroat" width="505" hieght="374" title="Common Yellowthroat"><br /><br />
We then caught a new Swainson's Thrush.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/102223LALO/102223_Swainsons_Thrush.jpg" alt="Swainson's Thrush" width="505" hieght="374" title="Swainson's Thrush"><br /><br />
Grasses are in full bloom and we are beging to see, and catch, Indigo Buntings. Just two females today. Many were seen feeding along the lanes and we hope to get a lot more in the coming weeks.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/102223LALO/102223_Indigo_Bunting.jpg" alt="Indigo Bunting" width="505" hieght="374" title="Indigo Bunting"><br /><br />
We did manage to recapture a Carolina Wren along the way.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/102223LALO/102223_Carolina_Wren.jpg" alt="Carolina Wren" width="505" hieght="374" title="Carolina Wren"><br /><br />
Just before the end of the day we got our Bird-of-the-day. The first Swamp Sparrow we have had in a long time. Previous years have reshaped the landscape and kept the sparrows out by the lake. Now they might be moving closer with new grasses springing up.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/102223LALO/102223_Swamp_Sparrow.jpg" alt="Swamp Sparrow" width="505" hieght="374" title="Swamp Sparrow"><br /><br />
Still have some time to bring in new migrants next Sunday. Waiting on hearing Kinglets and Robins soon and then we wait for Yellow-rumps. Stay tuned!<br /><br />

Instead the last of the clouds dropped rain just before we got there and it just made things humid until mid-morning. Otherwise, it was a nice enough day.<br /><br />
House Wrens started our day.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/105123LALO/101523_House_Wren_01.jpg" alt="House Wren" width="505" hieght="374" title="House Wren"><br /><br />
New visitors Denise and George arrived in time to start releasing birds.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/105123LALO/101523_House_Wren_02.jpg" alt="House Wren" width="505" hieght="647" title="House Wren"><br /><br />
The adult male Common Yellowthroats are now arriving in larger numbers.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/105123LALO/101523_Common_Yellowthroat_01.jpg" alt="Common Yellowthroat" width="505" hieght="374" title="Common Yellowthroat"><br /><br />
When we first set up and sat by the banding table we heard a new sound back near Net 2. Our phone apps correctly ID'd annd we soon caught a Wood Thrush. These are the most infrequent visitors of the thrushes so they are always a joy to band.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/105123LALO/101523_Wood_Thrush.jpg" alt="Wood Thrush" width="505" hieght="374" title="Wood Thrush"><br /><br />
Adult female Common Yellowthroats are also arriving.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/105123LALO/101523_Common_Yellowthroat_02.jpg" alt="Common Yellowthroat" width="505" hieght="374" title="Common Yellowthroat"><br /><br />
We captured 4 Carolina Wrens today. 2 of them were new, younger birds.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/105123LALO/101523_Carolina_Wren_01.jpg" alt="Carolina Wren" width="505" hieght="374" title="Carolina Wren"><br /><br />
One of our visitors, Llory, waved us toward Net 14 saying there was a yellow bird in the net. It wasn't yellow, though. It was an all-over green female Painted Bunting. Andrew was wondering when we were going to catch one again.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/105123LALO/101523_Painted_Bunting.jpg" alt="Painted Bunting" width="505" hieght="374" title="Painted Bunting"><br /><br />
Another species has finally arrived to the banding site. Western Palm Warbler.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/105123LALO/101523_Western_Palm_Warbler_01.jpg" alt="Western Palm Warbler" width="505" hieght="374" title="Western Palm Warbler"><br /><br />
Llory got to release several birds during the session.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/105123LALO/101523_Western_Palm_Warbler_02.jpg" alt="Western Palm Warbler" width="505" hieght="647" title="Western Palm Warbler"><br /><br />
It has been a bit, but we were hearing Eastern Phoebes out near the lake. Then we caught one.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/105123LALO/101523_Eastern_Phoebe_01.jpg" alt="Eastern Phoebe" width="505" hieght="374" title="Eastern Phoebe"><br /><br />
Then another Western Palm Warbler.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/105123LALO/101523_Western_Palm_Warbler_03.jpg" alt="Western Palm Warbler" width="505" hieght="374" title="Western Palm Warbler"><br /><br />
THEN another Eastern Phoebe!<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/105123LALO/101523_Eastern_Phoebe_02.jpg" alt="Eastern Phoebe" width="505" hieght="374" title="Eastern Phoebe"><br /><br />
We ended the day as we started with a last House Wren.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/105123LALO/101523_House_Wren_03.jpg" alt="House Wren" width="505" hieght="374" title="House Wren"><br /><br />
Not a bad day. Still looks like we will have another good week next Sunday.<br /><br />

But, as Andrew told the crew, "Brace yourself for the rush!" as the latest BirdCast foresaw a huge surge for this weekend. The dam broke this weekend! Our biggest one day total for the Fall at Lake Lotus. Other flyway spots have big numbers in October, but we are in a local, urban region and don't usually have huge numbers. <br /><br />
Our biggest count in the past was just under 50 birds. Today was crazy good with nice temperatures to boot. A nice mix of sepecies was tallied, too.<br /><br />
Our first bird of the morning was an Ovenbird. We ended up with 5 by the end of the day.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/100823LALO/100823_Ovenbird_01.jpg" alt="Ovenbird" width="505" hieght="347" title="Ovenbird"><br /><br />
We usually only get a couple of House Wrens on any given day. Today they were flowing through like mad. We ended up with 12.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/100823LALO/100823_House_Wren.jpg" alt="House Wren" width="505" hieght="347" title="House Wren"><br /><br />
One of our visitors learns how to release a wriggly wren.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/100823LALO/100823_Volunteer_01.jpg" alt="Visitor" width="505" hieght="674" title="Visitor"><br /><br />
Jenny photographed a Common Yellowthroat with the growing number of bags in the background.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/100823LALO/100823_Common_Yellow-throat.jpg" alt="Common Yellowthroat" width="505" hieght="347" title="Common Yellowthroat"><br /><br />
Then the Gray Catbirds began to flow in. Another of our visitors got to release one of the first. 27 Catbirds today with more bouncing out of the nets.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/100823LALO/100823_GrayCatbird_01.jpg" alt="Gray Catbird" width="505" hieght="347" title="Gray Catbird"><br /><br />
Susan gets ready to settle in for data recording with Andrew at the table.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/100823LALO/100823_Table.jpg" alt="Table" width="505" hieght="347" title="Table"><br /><br />
We ended up with 11 Common Yellowthroats covering all ages and both sexes. This was our sole female.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/100823LALO/100823_Common_Yellow-throat_02.jpg" alt="Common Yellowthroat" width="505" hieght="347" title="Common Yellowthroat"><br /><br />
Of our 4 Carolina Wrens, 3 were recaptures and a surprising unbanded one. Thought we had them all by now.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/100823LALO/100823_Carolina_Wren.jpg" alt="Carolina Wren" width="505" hieght="347" title="Carolina Wren"><br /><br />
Our next visitor got to release one of the recaptured Carolina Wrens.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/100823LALO/100823_Volunteer_02.jpg" alt="Visitor" width="505" hieght="347" title="Visitor"><br /><br />
Always nice to catch one of our local Brown Thrashers.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/100823LALO/100823_Brown_Thrasher.jpg" alt="Brown Thrasher" width="505" hieght="347" title="Brown Thrasher"><br /><br />
Migrant White-eyed Vireos are making their way through. They all have a fat score of 3 which is the highest. <br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/100823LALO/100823_White-eyed_Vireo.jpg" alt="White-eyed Vireo" width="505" hieght="347" title="White-eyed Vireo"><br /><br />
Nelida's husband and youngest stopped by and got to release some birds. This was one of our many Catbirds.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/100823LALO/100823_Volunteer_03.jpg" alt="Visitor" width="505" hieght="674" title="Visitor"><br /><br />
A male Black-throated Blue Warbler always brings gasps. <br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/100823LALO/100823_Black-throated_Blue_Warbler.jpg" alt="Black-throated Blue Warbler" width="505" hieght="347" title="Black-throated Blue Warbler"><br /><br />
Nelida returned from a trip down the lanes with 4 more birds.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/100823LALO/100823_Nalida.jpg" alt="Nelida" width="505" hieght="674" title="Nelida"><br /><br />
Her son releases one of our House Wrens.<br /><br />

A welcome surprise arrived a little early in this season. A male Indigo Bunting! They typically come through closer to November.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/100823LALO/100823_Indigo_Bunting.jpg" alt="Indigo Bunting" width="505" hieght="347" title="Indigo Bunting"><br /><br />
Our 3rd Acadian Flycatcher of the Session was next.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/100823LALO/100823_Acadian_Flycatcher.jpg" alt="Acadian Flycatcher" width="505" hieght="347" title="Acadian Flycatcher"><br /><br />
Another of our visitors got to release some birds, including this Ovenbird.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/100823LALO/100823_Volunteer_05.jpg" alt="Visitor" width="505" hieght="674" title="Visitor"><br /><br />
We could hear one of our volunteers yelling in pain at Net 2 so we thought a Cardinal was going to be brought down. Instead, it was a Tufted Titmouse. They bite almost as hard.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/100823LALO/100823_Tufted_Titmouse.jpg" alt="Tufted Titmouse" width="505" hieght="347" title="Tufted Titmouse"><br /><br />
We were secretly wishing for a Swainson's Thrush and it manifested!<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/100823LALO/100823_Swainsons_Thrush_01.jpg" alt="Swainson's Thrush" width="505" hieght="347" title="Swainson's Thrush"><br /><br />
Susan got to release this gorgeous Swainson's Thrush.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/100823LALO/100823_Swainsons_Thrush_02.jpg" alt="Swainson's Thrush" width="505" hieght="347" title="Swainson's Thrush"><br /><br />
As the morning was winding down, we captured a pair of American Redstarts. This is the female.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/100823LALO/100823_American_Redstart_01.jpg" alt="American Redstart" width="505" hieght="347" title="American Redstart"><br /><br />
Right next to her was the male American Redstart. Both birds were loaded with fat. Fuel for their long journey.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/100823LALO/100823_American_Redstart_02.jpg" alt="American Redstart" width="505" hieght="347" title="American Redstart"><br /><br />
As we were closing nets we got bird 69 which turned out to be a recaptured Ovenbird. Its recapture made it the first and last bird of this very busy, rewarding day.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/100823LALO/100823_69th.jpg" alt="69" width="505" hieght="674" title="69"><br /><br />
Whew! This is the day we wait for all year and it was worth it. Next week is forecast for rain most of the days. Hope it clears in time for next Sunday.<br /><br />

Next (planned) Banding Day: Sunday, October 8th.<br />
All nets will be opened by 6:50 A.M.<br /><br /><div class="blogger-post-footer"><br /></div>J. Andrew Boylehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04947644267414118511noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-644439624905592574.post-27465810715979217112023-09-24T14:59:00.120-07:002023-09-29T15:58:27.602-07:00Waiting for the RushLast week on September and we are eagerly awaiting October. That is when the migration rush kicks in. Today was an instering mix.<br /><br />
We still have juvenile Common Yellowthroats coming through. This one liked us so much he found 3 different nets throughout the day.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/092423LALO/092423_Common_Yellowtroat_01.jpg" alt="Common Yellowthroat" width="505" hieght="674" title="Common Yellowthroat"><br /><br />
The female Common Yellowthroats always seem to get messy feathers.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/092423LALO/092423_Common_Yellowtroat_02.jpg" alt="Common Yellowthroat" width="505" hieght="347" title="Common Yellowthroat"><br /><br />
This time of year also brings migrating White-eyed Vireos like this juvenile. Young birds has gray eyes until thier second year.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/092423LALO/092423_White-eyed_Vireo_01.jpg" alt="White-eyed Vireo" width="505" hieght="674" title="White-eyed Vireo"><br /><br />
Running a little late, but we finally caught a Veery. They are usually here the very start of September.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/092423LALO/092423_Veery.jpg" alt="Veery" width="505" hieght="347" title="Veery"><br /><br />
Next up was an adult White-eyed Vireo which had a little attitude.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/092423LALO/092423_White-eyed_Vireo_02.jpg" alt="White-eyed Vireo" width="505" hieght="347" title="White-eyed Vireo"><br /><br />
It was also loaded with fat for its journey.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/092423LALO/092423_White-eyed_Vireo_03.jpg" alt="White-eyed Vireo" width="505" hieght="347" title="White-eyed Vireo"><br /><br />
They have been very vocal all month, but Red-Eyed Vireos tend to stay in the upper story of the trees. This one was captured in the middle of the lanes where we didn't expect it.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/092423LALO/092423_Red-eyed_Vireo.jpg" alt="Red-Eyed Vireo" width="505" hieght="347" title="Red-Eyed Vireo"><br /><br />
As we were closing for the morning, Susan found a recaptured male Northern Cardinal. If you want to know what a Cardinal bite feels like, I am pretty sure she can tell you.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/092423LALO/092423_Northern_Cardinal.jpg" alt="Northern Cardinal" width="505" hieght="674" title="Northern Cardinal"><br /><br />
Our last bird of the day was a recaptured Carolina Wren.<br /><br />

However, we can see Fall right around the corner which slightly cooler temperatures.<br /><br />
Common Yellowthroats were out again this week. We ended up with 6 of them throughout the morning.<br /><br />
<img src="http://www.ratherbephotog.com/birds/Wekiva/091723LALO/091723_Common_Yellowthroat_01.jpg" alt="Common Yellowthroat" width="505" hieght="347" title="Common Yellowthroat"><br /><br />
We recaptured one of our female Northern Cardinals in between.<br /><br />

All of the Common Yellowthroats today were juvenile males. <br /><br />

We also recaptured a Carolina Wren.<br /><br />

A couple weeks later than expected, we finally caught our first Veery.<br /><br />

We ended the day just like last week with an Acadian Flycatcher. It was captured in the same net as the one last week. There must be plenty of their preferred food right around Net 15. <br /><br />

Looking forward to hopefully higher captures next week.<br /><br />
